The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is designed to be a proactive, science- and risk-based framework for preventing food safety problems before they happen. (link to Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) | FDA)
Effective January 2011, FSMA requires pet food manufacturers include “risk based” analyses and preventative steps in their food safety plans. (Prior to 2011 these steps were optional.) Risk-based analyses include:
- Identify every possible way a food could become contaminated.
- Identify and document all steps the manufacturer is taking to prevent or minimize risk.
- Document detailed steps to be taken if a problem is detected with any of the above.
Why FSMA Matters to Fresh Pet Food
While the more rigorous guidelines in FSMA initially posed a challenge for many companies, most fresh pet food manufacturers welcomed the change as an opportunity to formalize and publicize their already high standards.
